As we have entered the joyous month of August, there is a lot of positive and refreshing aura everywhere. First of all, it’s the rains playing the game of hide and seek with the rays of sunshine hiding behind the cloud and secondly, it is also the beginning of festive season, the foremost holy month of Sawan akka Shravan!
In our country, there are two different periodic cycles followed for this holy month. They are followed in Northern India and the one that is observed in the western part of India. Each being interrelated but still different. The reason being that the holy month of Sawan starts earlier in North India than in Western India because North India follows the Purnimanta lunar calendar (full moon to full moon), while Western India follows the Amanta lunar calendar (new moon to new moon). This difference in calendars causes a discrepancy in start dates.
The evergreen rituals, practices and traditions of Sawan are what make it auspicious, unique and one of its kind. It’s that time of the year when you get to witness and hear lots of devotees undergoing the mediation of enchantment for lord Shiva, visiting temples, especially on Mondays (Somvaar).
Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh
