Gateway to the northeast is home to numerous endemic plants and animal species along with several endangered ones.

Here is a list of places where you can experience the rich wildlife of the state

Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, Pabitara

This wildlife sanctuary lies in the floodplains of the Brahmaputra River. This 38 sq km territory was once a grazing reserve but earned fame in 1961 after the spotting of one-horned rhinoceros. Merely 50 km away from the capital city, this sanctuary is an avoidable getaway to spot rhinos in their natural habitat.

Except for the rhinoceros other animal which adds value to this sanctuary are Asiatic buffaloes, bear and python. You can see leopards lazing on tree branches; this place is a paradise for birdwatchers. Regular evening and morning safaris take place to enjoy the scenic views of these animals. Those who want to experience real wildlife, can opt for an Elephant safari too.

Garampani Wildlife Sanctuary, Karbi Anglong

It is the rare flora and fauna that Garampani Sanctuary should be included in your list. It covers an area of 6 sq km in the district. The sanctuary is blessed with immense biodiversity which includes hoolock gibbons, golden langurs, jungle cats, leopards and a wide variety of animals can be found here. Apart from this area is also home to rare species of orchid that lights up the whole landscape.

Apart from animals, this place is a paradise for birds too, some of the bird species that can be found here are doves, woodpeckers, kingfishers, red junglefowl, brown fish owls and numerous species of hornbills can be spotted here.

Kaziranga National Park

One of the famous and well national park biodiversity which is popular in entire world is situated in the state of Assam. It is spread over 858 sq km and is surrounded by Brhamputra River on both sides. 

The park is divided into four ranges Central, Western, Eastern, Western most Burha Pahar and Northen. The first four lie on the southern side of river and last is on northern part. The best way to explore the park is on the backs of elephants because of these gentle creatures through tall grass. 

The main attraction of the park the one horned rhinoceros are usually found here in good numbers gazing around with deer and buffaloes. If you have short of time you can explore the park on a jeep safari too and it is highly recommendable.

Manas National Park

Located in the Himalayan foothills in western Assam. Manas was originally a game reserve then it got converted to a tiger reserve and lastly national park in 1990. It shares a border with the Buxa tiger reserve in West Bengal. The park was also declared as Chirang- Ripu Elephant Reserve which serves as the international corridor for elephant migration between India and Bhutan.

Manas National Park harbours more than 20 endangered species. Mammals which are commonly found here are rhinos, elephants, tigers, Pigmy, wild pigs, water buffaloes and much more. National Park is the best place to explore the unique and endangered wildlife of the state.
