Barish and Hill stations!

June has always been the month of new beginnings.  The beginning of new academic sessions in school, bidding adieu to summers and eagerly waiting for rains. In some or the other way June has always been special. Especially with the warm welcome of monsoon, it’s a new way of life for nature as well as us!

Barish brings in the new motivation to head out, explore and enjoy the joyous aura of nature. Being a Mumbaikar, monsoon is one such season or actually the only season where the entire city awaits to get drenched and fall in love with refreshing views, cold breeze and cheerful vibes.  Not just the city, but the entire state of Maharashtra paints itself in the hues of green shades.

Trips during the rainy season are a wholesome mood. Especially the ones to the mountain, the entire journey and excitement of reaching the destination is totally worth the wait.  For me rain and hill stations have always been special because of my dad, he is a travel enthusiast.

Always ready to head out explore try something new.  Currently, he is eagerly waiting for rain so he can plan a one-day or short trip where he enjoys golden era songs along with picturesque views and his go-to snack Vada Pav with garam Chai.

Indeed, everyone has their own way of romanticizing their love for monsoon. For some, it’s sitting at the windowpane/ balcony of the house enjoying a cup of tea, for some, it’s heading out on their vehicles for a refreshing ride while for some it’s about climbing a mountain for a mesmerizing view.

The combination of Barish & hill stations is just like the irresistible bond of a campfire and a starry night, making the soul happy and the heart calm. As we all eagerly wait for the rain to shower in our life, various hill stations showcase their true colours during the rainy season and surely is bliss to witness. Below is the gest of a few of them.

Munnar, Kerala

Munnar transforms into a lush green paradise during the monsoons. The tea gardens glisten with fresh rain, and the waterfalls are in full flow, making it a sight to behold. Don’t miss a visit to the Attukal Waterfalls – it’s breathtaking! Also, the Eravikulam National Park is a must-visit for nature enthusiasts looking to catch a glimpse of the rare Nilgiri Tahr amidst the misty hills.

Coorg, Karnataka

Known as the Scotland of India, Coorg becomes even more enchanting in the rain. The coffee plantations are a sight to behold, with the aroma of fresh coffee beans filling the air. Abbey Falls, surrounded by dense greenery, is a must-see, offering a perfect spot for nature photography. Additionally, the Dubare Elephant Camp is an exciting place to visit, where you can interact with these cute giants.

 Lonavala, Maharashtra

My favorite weekend getaway from Mumbai and Pune, Lonavala is at its best during the rainy season. The Bhushi Dam overflows with water, creating a stunning cascade that attracts many visitors. Tiger Point offers panoramic views of the lush, rain-soaked hills and valleys. Don’t forget to indulge in some local delicacies like hot ‘Chikki’ along with ‘Fudge’ while enjoying the scenic beauty.

 Shillong, Meghalaya

Often referred to as the ‘Scotland of the East,’ Shillong is simply mesmerizing in the rain. The Elephant Falls, cascading down in three layers, becomes more dramatic and beautiful. The panoramic views from Shillong Peak, often covered in clouds, are spectacular. The vibrant local culture and markets add to the charm, making it a memorable visit.

Darjeeling, West Bengal

Famous for its tea gardens and stunning views of the Himalayas, Darjeeling is even more picturesque during the rains. Sip on some hot Darjeeling tea while enjoying the view from Tiger Hill, where the mist rolls over the hills creating a mystical atmosphere. The toy train ride offers a nostalgic journey through lush landscapes. Don’t miss the Peace Pagoda, which offers a serene spot amidst the rainy backdrop.

Ooty, Tamil Nadu

Ooty, with its beautiful gardens and pleasant climate, becomes a green heaven in the monsoon. Ooty Lake is perfect for a boat ride, surrounded by eucalyptus trees and mist. The Botanical Gardens, with a wide variety of flora, look even more vibrant in the rain. For a panoramic view of the valley, head to Doddabetta Peak, the highest point in the Nilgiris.

Cherrapunji, Meghalaya

One of the wettest places on earth, Cherrapunji is a monsoon lover’s paradise. The living root bridges, ingeniously created by the local tribes, are a unique natural wonder. The Nohkalikai Falls, one of the tallest in India, is awe-inspiring with its powerful flow during the monsoon. Exploring the Mawsmai Caves offers an adventurous experience amidst the monsoon showers.

Nainital, Uttarakhand

The ‘Lake District of India’ looks even more enchanting when it rains. The Naini Lake, surrounded by hills covered in mist, creates a picturesque and tranquil setting perfect for a peaceful boat ride. Exploring the lush forests and enjoying the panoramic views from the Viewpoint, is a must where the Himalayas peek through the clouds. Don’t miss the bustling Mall Road, where you can indulge in local delicacies and shop for souvenirs while enjoying the cool, rainy weather.

The relationship of Barish with Hill Station is not only perfect but magical in its own way. The magic of reaching a destination, that bliss of undertaking a journey is something surreal and way too hard to express in words.

Rains are on the way, and most of the country has already been blessed, eagerly waiting for the refreshing showers in Mumbai! Hope it embraces our life soon and that we can finally plan a rainy picnic.

Let me know in the comments, which hill station you would like to visit or is your favourite.

 Till then Happy Sunday!
